A Night With the Boys

How is it that I can become so "old" so fast.  How is it that I can forget just how fun it is to let go and be a kid, to let go of all the concerns that surround me, all of my responsibility and just scream and run with abandon?!

Well, thanks to one of my favorite pastors, Matt Chandler from the Village Church in Texas (Andrew and I listen to his podcasts and are HUGE fans of his direct honesty and his true love for Jesus), I was reminded that we need to have major kid fun once in awhile.  So Andrew and I copied his great idea last night with the boys in our Boys and Mom night out.

First, I want to thank my mom and dad for taking Kayla for the whole night!  They had a special time going to pizza with their granddaughter and then having her all on her own to spend the night.  They say she is an angel and a true treasure.  We are thankful to have parents who are so willing to give their time and love to our kids and who want to create special memories with them!!  Thank you, mom and dad!

Having fun with Nema and Papa

So, with the baby out of the house, we set out on a fun night with the big boys to do BIG BOY fun!  We first went to see Despicable Me in 3D, which was a fun movie especially for boys since there was tons of blowing things up!

Then, following Matt's suggestion, we took them on a surprise trip to Target.  Their eyes lit with excitement as we walked in and told them we had a surprise for them.  Then, they were practically jumping out of their pants when we got closer to the toy aisle!  Where did we stop?  The NERF GUN aisle.  As we pulled into the short aisle lined with yellow boxes, we turned to see two sets of eyes staring at us in question - What now?  Our reply, "Choose wisely, our sons" for when we get home, we are having a four way Nerf Gun fight in the back yard!  They screamed in excitement, we couldn't contain them and it was so fun for all of us to pick our choice of gun (although we did set a $10 price limit which of course they exceeded and used their own money to cover the difference).

When we arrived home, the boxes were torn open, the guns were loaded and as our $5 pizza baked in the oven, we counted down from 10, spread out across the yard and on "GO", chased each other trying to be the last man standing and winner of the round!

And I hate to brag, but being the only woman of the group, I have to admit my skills even in pelting Andrew - I won two of three rounds, Wyatt winning the third!  The boys asked how I was so skilled and Daddy told them he thought I was a spy at night who snuck out to fight villains.  Yeah right, me with no sleep?!  Never!

The night ended filling our tummies with pizza, reading stories and singing together.

I am reminded that sometimes boys just need to be wild.  Their inner instinct is to hunt, to run, to provide.  And while some people may think that guns in any form are bad for kids, the truth is that whether you give them guns to play with or not, they will find a way to shoot things, either with sticks or their hands.  I am glad that together, we could find a way to deal with their inner wild side that yearns to be set free!

It truly was a magical fun night that we can't wait to do again!!
